Queen’s New Gay Footman Makes First Public Appearance

Ollie Roberts, an openly gay former serviceman, made his first public outing as the Queen’s Footman during Saturday’s Trooping the Colour ceremony in London.

It was the first time the 21 year old had joined the monarch since being appointed to the role of footman to the Queen.

Trooping the Colour is an annual event which takes place as part of celebrations marking the Queen’s official birthday.

Roberts, who is a former member of the Royal Air force, will now live on the grounds of Buckingham Palace. He will travel with the Queen to formal ceremonies and when she visits her other residences.

The appointment of an openly gay man to such a highly visible position in royal service has been welcomed by many royal watchers. The move is part of a commitment by the monarch towards tackling anti-LGBT discrimination.

Various members of the LGBT community attended the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in Windsor last month.

The younger generation of the Royal Family, including Princes William and Harry, have shown support for LGBT rights. Their mother, Princess Diana, also did much to support the LGBT community.

Roberts, who was born in Wales, will have a busy schedule from now on. The Queen’s Footman is required to ride on all carriages with the Queen.

Most formal royal engagements occur over the summer, so we should expect to see Roberts riding with the Queen to a number of events. The next will be Royal Ascot in just over a week’s time.
