Catch acclaimed author-performer Daniel Alexander Jones at the LGBT Center

The Second Tuesday Series is thrilled to present acclaimed author, academic, and performer Daniel Alexander Jones.

On Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at 7:00 pm at The LGBT Center in New York City, Jones will talk about several new projects that include the recent publications of “Love Like Light: Plays and Performance Texts” and “Particle and Wave: A Conversation” (with Alexis Pauline Gumbs).

Daniel Alexander Jones exemplifies the artist-as-energy worker. His wildflower body of work includes plays, performance pieces, recorded music, concerts, music theatre events, essays, and long-form improvisations. The Herb Alpert Foundation notes that he “creates multi-dimensional experiences where bodies, minds, emotions, voices, and spirits conjoin, shimmer, and heal.”

Jones’s acclaimed performance pieces include “Black Light” (Public Theater, Greenwich House Theatre, American Repertory Theatre, Penumbra Theatre); “Duat” (Soho Rep); “An Integrator’s Manual” (La MaMa); and “Radiate” (Soho Rep and National Tour). Jones has recorded five albums of original songs as his alter-ego, Jomama Jones. He is recognized as a key voice in the development of Theatrical Jazz and has made serious contributions to Black Experimental Theatre and Performance.

Jones was a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow, the recipient of a 2019 Helen Merrill Playwriting Award, and is a Doris Duke Artist Award recipient. He was a Mellon Foundation Creative Research Fellow at the University of Washington, Seattle. Jones is a Professor of Theatre and Playwriting at Fordham University. He was recognized with the 2021 PEN America/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theatre Award and is a Producing Artist with the CALARTS Center for New Performance.

ABOUT THE SECOND TUESDAY SERIES

At 35 years, the Second Tuesday Series is the longest running program at The LGBT Center. Since 1985, more than 400 speakers have made presentations in the arts, academia, and politics. Speakers representing every major cultural award, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Grammy Award, the Academy Award (The Oscars), Broadway’s Tony Awards, the Lambda Literary Award, and the National Book Award, as well as the UK Booker Literary Award, have made presentations. Through this program, Larry Kramer spoke about the plight of the AIDS Crisis in March 1987, thus beginning ACT-UP, the largest direct action AIDS organization in the world.

ABOUT THE LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL & TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY CENTER

The LGBT Center is thrilled to welcome the community back to in-person events! The priority for The Center is the health and safety of its staff, visitors, and community. The Center is actively monitoring the ongoing situation with COVID-19 and the Delta variant as well as the guidelines from New York City, New York State, and the CDC. The Center will keep guests apprised of all requirements for entry to the building and will continue to update this page with current safety policies.

Established in 1983, the LGBT Community Center is at the heart of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in New York City, providing quality health and wellness programs in a welcoming space that fosters connections and celebrates our cultural contributions. The Center serves the community with a full-service approach to programming, from hosting arts and entertainment events and advocacy groups to offering youth and overall wellness programs. After the Covid lockdown, the Center will plan on welcoming more than 300,000 visits each year to their building in the West Village. The Center has a long history as a cultural hub, with ongoing presentations that showcase the work of both emerging and established artists.
