Give Sarah Shook and the Disarmers a listen

Sarah Shook & The Disarmers recently released a new album Nightroamer and it’s as good as queer country gets.

Through critically acclaimed releases Sidelong (2015) and Years (2018) the North Carolina-based quintet fronted by bisexual/pansexual/queer Shook (pronouns” they/them) have built a solid reputation as a honky tonk/country indie band with a punk rock spirit.

On Nightroamer the group expands their sound with pop sensibilities and melodies without sacrificing its unflinching intensity and raw edge. They have released narrative videos of songs on the album: “Talkin’ To Myself”, “No Mistakes“, and “It Doesn’t Change Anything“.

Produced by Grammy-winner Pete Anderson (Dwight Yoakam, k.d. lang), Nightroamer is a collection of 10 songs written by Shook that take a hard look at relationships, but do not claim to have one-size-fits-all answers.

Shook’s gorgeously rich lead vocals and assured rhythm guitar are key factors in why we recommend you take a listen. The album was recorded just ahead of the pandemic and it’s one of the good ones that seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle of locked down livestreams and pandemic parties.

Shook is backed by the abled and seasoned Eric Peterson (lead guitar), Aaron Oliva (bass), Will Rigby (drums), and Phil Sullivan (pedal steel). If you happen to be able to catch the band perform live, you’ll find they put on a charismatic and commanding live performance.
