Robert Garcia on track to become first LGBTQ immigrant elected to Congress

LGBTQ Victory Fund has endorsed candidate Robert Garcia won the primary election for California’s 42nd Congressional District. With this victory, he is now on track to become the first out LGBTQ immigrant ever elected to Congress.

According to LGBTQ Victory Institute’s Out for America Map which tracks out LGBTQ elected officials nationally, there are currently just 11 out LGBTQ people serving in Congress.

Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund, issued the following statement about his win:

“During his time as mayor of Long Beach, Mayor Garcia has demonstrated strong leadership and ability to advance policy that delivers real results, including protecting abortion rights, championing progressive education and climate policy, increasing workers’ rights and expanding LGBTQ protections. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic has been recognized by the White House and Governor Newsom as a national model. His commitment to increasing equity is exactly what we need in Congress at a time of increased anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigrant hate. We are confident Mayor Garcia will be a powerful pro-equality, pro-choice voice in Congress and will inspire countless other people to run for office.”

Victory Fund named Garcia a Game Changer candidate, a designation given to congressional and statewide candidates in history-making races, that comes with additional support and services from LGBTQ Victory Fund to ensure they win on Election Day.
