Record number of LGBTQ+ candidates elected to Chicago City Council
Three LGBTQ+ Chicago City Council candidates have won runoff elections: Timmy Knudsen, Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth and Lamont Robinson¸ all three of whom Victory Fund endorsed, as history has been made again!
Manaa-Hoppenworth is now the first out LGBTQ+ Asian-American person elected to the city council and Robinson is the first out LGBTQ+ Black man elected to the city council. With tonight’s wins, LGBTQ+ representation on the Chicago City Council will increase from seven to nine, a historic number.
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, released the following statement:
“Tonight’s wins make it clear that Chicago will remain a national leader for LGBTQ+ rights and that at the end of the day, Chicagoans saw through anti-LGBTQ dog whistles and chose exceptional LGBTQ+ leaders because of their qualifications, positive visions for the city and deeply rooted community support. We are confident that under their leadership, Chicago will continue on its path towards increased equity and opportunity for all residents.”
