Susan Rennie’s feminist art series now on show

Visual artist Susan Rennie, who in 1973 co-authored the book The New Woman’s Survival Catalog, a compilation of women-owned-and-run organizations, businesses and services, and went on to edit other books, has an exciting exhibition on now until July 8 at Duron Gallery, SPARC.

“Subverting the Male Gaze: Susan Rennie Disrupts Art History” takes famous art works and paintings by canonized male artists and then inserts an image of her into the composition. This series of digital photo montages inserts the octogenarian feminist into iconic works of Western art, poking fun at the reverence with which male artists have been treated, and answering back to the male gaze that so often depicts women in objectificatory ways.

Each piece delivers a blow to patriarchal systems of image-making by reframing canonical scenes through an irreverent and mischievous feminist lens.

Rennie earned a BA from Barnard College and received a Ph.D. in Political Philosophy from Columbia University. She taught Social Sciences at Union Institute & University, worked as a women’s health activist, and lives in Venice, California.

The Artists’ reception is on June 17 and the exhibition runs until July 8.
