Broadway Pride!
Pride in New York City this month can be celebrated in so many ways, and I can’t think of a better way (other than joining either of the two marches themselves) than supporting theatre.
It may seem elitist but so many LGBTQ+ people work in the theatre, either as performers of creators and crew so you are supporting their livelihoods too.
Any show in new york on Broadway or Off, is a great night out and sometimes you are able to witness a piece of art so special that no camera crew could ever capture it.
Here are our five favourite shows that we feel have a sense of amazing pride:
The Cher Show
A story of the life of Cher featuring the music of Sonny and Cher and about a 150 Bob Mackie Gowns!
This is a helluva night out and will have you set up to celebrate for about a month!

Prom
Four fading Broadway stars are in desperate need of a new stage. So when they hear that trouble is brewing around a small-town Indiana prom—and the press is involved—they know that it’s time to put a spotlight on the issue…and themselves.
The town’s parents want to keep the dance on the straight and narrow—but when one student just wants to bring her girlfriend to prom, the entire town has a date with destiny.
Now, Broadway’s brassiest are coming to join the fight and they are ready to kick-ball-change the world. JUNE 19th – JULY 6th, 2019
Golden Girls A Musical Parody – Pride Edition
Directly from your TV set comes a live stage show that follows your favorite over the hill funny women from Miami: Blanche, Dorothy, Roz, and Sophia are getting ready for the annual Shady Pines Retirement Home Gay Pride Talent Show when down on his luck guest star, Ricky Martin moves in next door. His wild, all night, salsa sessions distract the ladies from getting their much needed rehearsal. What ensues is a hilarious feud that can only end with one act as the most talented “queens” of Shady Pines.
Featuring an original pop score, a 1980’s fashion show, and the Ultimate Golden Girls Trivia Challenge.
“THE GOLDEN GIRLS MUSICAL PARODY – PRIDE EDITION is a highly irreverent, yet loving send-up of TV’s The Golden Girls that proves to be simultaneously evocative of the greatest moments from the original sitcom and a show with a voice all its own.” —Theatremania.
HERE Arts Center, 145 Sixth Avenue at Dominick Street June 19 – July 6th
Queerly
FRIGID New York @ Horse Trade is proud to present, the Fifth Annual Queerly, a festival seen through lavender-colored glasses, this June at The Kraine Theater (85 East 4th Street between 2nd Avenue and Bowery).
This year, they’re bringing together a panoply of performers from New York City and beyond for a gender-liminal, super-gay, non-conformist, totally butch, aggressively femme and subversive AF celebration of all things LGBTQIAP (and beyond).
Head to the website HERE for info on all shows!
Galas
The late, great Charles Ludlam and his beloved Ridiculous Theatrical Company helped forge NYC’s gay theatre scene back in the ’60s.
To celebrate Pride, Everett Quinton — Ludlam’s longtime partner both on stage and off — is mounting the first-ever revival of their 1983 romp Galas, about a demanding and deeply troubled opera diva, Maria Magdalena Galas.
Quinton directs and stars in this over-the-top satire, a high-camp take on highbrow culture.
Runs June 13-28. Theatre at St. John’s, 81 Christopher Street between Seventh Avenue South and Bleecker Street.
If you are at the theatre this month, you will notice that your Playbill will have the rainbow flag across it too. Playbill’s website also has a special section dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ shows, performances and artists, so make sure to check it out too.
