Queer highlights of the Golden Globes nominations
From Matt Bomer in Fellow Travelers to Annette Bening and Jodie Foster in Nyad, there’s something for every LGBTQ+ viewer in this year’s Golden Globes nominations.
After what most of us in the media and entertainment field lamented might be a lean year for award-worthy flicks, the current crop of Golden Globe nominations has yielded more gems of film and television than perhaps previously thought. The surprise nomination of the year might just be Emerald Fennell’s utterly queer and sordid Saltburn, with an astonishing star turn (complete with nudity) from Barry Keoghan.
Keoghan is up for Best male actor in a film and he’s in the running against Colman Domingo for Rustin and Andrew Scott for All of Us Strangers. It’s a crowded male field this year! And it’s most exciting that gay historical series Fellow Travelers and Matt Bomer are receiving recognition with nods, too. Hunky Charles Melton proves he can act (May December). And yay to Pedro Pascal for The Last of Us!
But we can’t forget our queer female faves! The Margot Robbie-Greta Gerwig box office juggernaut Barbie landed the most nominations — nine — with Robbie getting her fourth GG nomination.
Pleasingly, newly-out singer Billie Eilish gets a nom for her song “What Was I Made For?”, from Barbie. We only wish Kate McKinnon received a nod for her queer-ish Weird Barbie.
Plus, also pinging our gaydar was the always-fabulous Rosamund Pike delivering possibly the most immortal line in Saltburn: “I was a lesbian for a while, you know, but it was all a bit too wet for me in the end…” and thus earns a nod for Best female actor in a supporting role in a film.
Other delights include a stunning portrait of bisexual music genius Leonard Bernstein, and very, very well-deserved nominations for both Annette Bening and Jodie Foster in lesbian endurance swimming epic Nyad. And speaking of double trouble, we were thrilled to see Rachel Weisz receive a nom for her queer gynecologist twins in Dead Ringers. Strange snub? Best film – musical or comedy didn’t actually have a musical in the final selection! However, we were pleased to see both Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks pick up nominations for The Color Purple.
