Late Spring theatre brings back bitch slaps, the Go Gos and Kit Kat Club
Late Spring is bringing a lot of diverse talent and shows to the Bay Area. Let’s check in on what’s happening.
Bitch Slap is the return and updated riotous original play by D’Arcy Drollinger who swears that there are more slaps in this show than that of Dynasty and Dallas combined, which happen to be among the soapy TV shows they are spoofing at SF Oasis through May 18. Drollinger brings back her popular and extremely talented cast for this return: Matthew Martin, Manuel Caneri, Katya Smirnoff-Skyy, JA Valentine and Michael Phillis. Left Coast Theatre Co. is back and loud and proud with their Hear Our Voices: Stories of Underrepresented Queer Identities, which runs through May 18. Left Coast ALWAYS puts together a collection of short plays. This time around there are five shorts, bringing into the light lesser-known facets of queer representation. New Conservatory Theatre Center has announced an exciting season for next year – totally worthy of season tickets. But before that they will be doing Tick, Tick…Boom, starting May 10, which was Jonathan Larson’s production before he grew popularity with the Tony winning Rent. While it was turned into an Oscar nominated movie, the more intimate NCTC production is definitely worth a look. Check it out at www.nctcsf.org.
The Berkeley Playhouse will bring back Head Over Heels to the Bay Area starting May 24. The musical, which started in San Francisco and went on to be nominated for Tony Awards on Broadway, is a jukebox musical featuring songs from the Go Gos. One thing that stands out, besides those songs, is this was one of the first mainstream musicals that featured non-binary actors and characters.
The Center REP is bringing the Kit Kat Club to Walnut Creek, starting May 26, 2024. Cabaret has an extra spotlight on it right now as it’s also currently on Broadway with a bunch of Tony Award nominations. The popular story is a chestnut of theatre productions, and the REP has cast two of my favorite local actors: Monique Hafen Adams and Dedrick Weathersby.
