‘But I’m a Cheerleader’ could be the best queer movie ever and it’s back!

The director’s cut of Jamie Babbit’s classic lesbian movie from 2000 starring a roll-call of famous LGBTQIA+ actors is back and better than ever.

This queer cult classic is, unbelievably, already 20 years old, and Lionsgate is celebrating with the release of a digital 4K Ultra HD director’s cut featuring never-before-seen deleted scenes.

But I’m a Cheerleader: Director’s Cut by Primetime Emmy Award-nominated director Jamie Babbit features an all-star cast of queer and ally luminaries including Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, Melanie Lynskey, RuPaul, Bud Cort, Michelle Williams, Julie Delpy, and Cathy Moriarty — just to name a few.

“I uncovered some amazing lost scenes that I wasn’t able to include in the original film and am so happy to see them added back into this cut. This film is so special to me and I can’t wait for everyone to fall in love with it all over again,” says director Jamie Babbit.

RuPaul plays an ex-gay camp counselor in But I’m a Cheerleader

This landmark black comedy focuses on teenager Megan (Natasha Lyonne), whose life as a so-called normal all-American suburban girl is upended when her parents suspect she is a lesbian. They send her to conversion therapy camp True Directions and there, Megan is counseled by ex-gay Mike (RuPaul Charles), and follows the strict program — but to no avail.

Megan falls for fellow camper (Clea DuVall) and much hilarity and spot-on satire ensures. This film was way ahead of its time and after four years of political regression in this country, it’s worth a return visit.

Actor-writer-director Clea DuVall had an early role in But I’m a Cheerleader

But I’m a Cheerleader: Director’s Cut features audio commentary, Jamie Babbit’s student film Discharge, and three new featurettes, including the “But I’m a Cheerleader Class Reunion” reuniting the cast for the first time in 20 years. With an RRP of $9.99, it makes a thoughtful gift, too.

The Director’s Cut for But I’m a Cheerleader is out on Digital 4K Ultra HD December 8. Watch the trailer here.
