Alan Cumming hosts hilarious Queer Comedy Extravaganza
This cabaret-style gathering hosted by Tony Award winner Alan Cumming features seven up-and-coming queer comedians and a stellar routine by Cumming himself.
The 75-minute special Club Cumming Presents a Queer Comedy Extravaganza has debuted on Showtime and features Joe Castle Baker, Julia Shiplett, duo Zach Teague & Drew Lausch, Nori Reed, Pat Regan, and Larry Owens.
Emmy® nominee and Tony winner Cumming (The Good Wife, Cabaret) hosts this cabaret-style gathering featuring the seven up-and-coming queer comedians that represent the diversity of the queer spectrum, but also different variations of standup comedy style—all while acknowledging the changes that have happened to the form under necessary pressure from the social justice movements of the last few years.
Cumming kicks off the evening with his own clever routine, which has been well thought out on the topic of aging—specifically his own experience as a 57-year-old. At the beginning and end of the show Cumming reminds his performers and audience that everyone is welcome, everything is done with kindness, and anything can happen. Only a performance master like Cumming (he won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a leading actor in a musical for Cabaret) can expertly tread the tightrope between the disastrous abuses of the standup comedy form (Dave Chappelle, Louis C.K.) and the need to preserve it as an expression of diversity, amusement, and America’s First Amendment which guarantees the right to free speech.
Described by Time Magazine as one of the most fun people in show business, Cumming has also won over 40 awards for his humanitarianism and social activism, and received both the Great Scot and Icon of Scotland award from his homeland. He was also made an OBE (Officer of the British Empire) for his contributions to the arts and LGBT equality by Queen Elizabeth II.
Club Cumming Presents A Queer Comedy Extravaganza is produced by Matt Schuler, with Alan Cumming serving as executive producer and Ryan Cunningham (Expecting Amy) serving as director and executive producer.
