Alexander’s Midweek Movie News
Aye aye aye! Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda’s film of his other musical, In the Heights, cast Jimmy Smits. Remember Jimmy Smits? I didn’t know he could sing…I didn’t know he was still working.
Is George Lucas on crack? He went on record saying that Jar Jar Binks is his favorite Star Wars character and Phantom Menace was his favorite Star Wars film. Somewhere Chewbacca is going aawhrgghghhwhw…(that was my Chewbacca impression).
Hellboy was a big disappointment at the box office and reviews from fans and critics have been extremely unkind. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Missing Link, the family movie, did even worse opening at 9th even though it opened in more theaters than Hellboy.
Jay and Silent Bob reboot welcomes hunk Chris Hemsworth…in other Jay and Silent Bob news, Ben Affleck is still waiting for the phone to ring.
Johnny Depp’s recent performances are not the only thing way over dramatic. His personal life is too. He continues his major battle with ex-wife Amber Heard and allegations of abuse and may affect his participation in Fantastic Beasts 3. As if that story line could get any more convoluted…I literally don’t know what Fantastic Beasts 2 was about, other than it looked pretty.
Lesser known animated films get sequels – Sing 2 and Croods 2 are coming in the next couple of years. Croods was actually a cute little film.
Grease is getting a prequel called Summer Loving. I think I saw a Bel Ami movie with that same title.
The Tomb Raider reboot is getting a sequel – even though no one asked for one. No one asked for an initial Tomb Raider reboot either.
We have been hearing about this Avatar sequels for about 343 years now. News came out that Michelle Yeoh (most recently from Star Trek Discovery and Crazy Rich Asians) is joining the cast as a human scientist. Yaaasss queen.
Mighty Mouse is getting a film! Its being written by the duo who wrote The Meg. Which I called The Meh.
The Nun – from the Conjuring franchise – is getting a sequel. I know what I’m giving up for Lent.
Stan Lee’s cameo in Avengers: Endgame will be his last cameo appearance. RIP.
In odd casting news, Emma Stone will costar with Ralph Fiennes in a horror comedy, yep its being titled as a horror comedy. The Menu will be directed by Election and Sideway’s Alexander Payne.
Daniel Craig still wasn’t buying the new Bond script so he brought it Phoebe Waller-Bridge in to give the next film’s script a look over and some minor redos. This poor film seems to have a plague on it. Hopefully, Craig’s swan song as Bond won’t be a bad one.
It is confirmed that Emperor Palpatine will be back for the final Star Wars film. We also know from the new trailer that Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian is back in the Millennium Falcon’s pilot seat. More surprises are reportedly in store for the big finale. I’m hoping the film ends with a big gay wedding with C-3P0 and R2-D2.
No one is happy with the Lion King’s live action, and by live action I mean all CGI (insert eye roll here), version of Scar. Social media and the web Lion Kingers say Scar doesn’t seem sexy or as menacing as Jeremy Irons’ version. Like I said before, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. And Disney is far from broke.
