BenDeLaCreme delights in one woman show
After speaking with DeLa about her show in April, I finally had the pleasure of seeing “BenDeLaCreme is…Ready to be Committed” at Sony Hall in New York City last night.
Written by and starring the Rupaul’s Drag Race superstar, DeLa takes us with her as she journeys down the aisle for an impromptu wedding ceremony. Everything is in place except, well… the groom! It’s a mad dash to the altar as we encounter sassy wedding cake toppers, Grindr-ific bachelors, queeny stylists and even Death itself!
Delivered with all the terminally delightful charm DeLa is famous for, the show is fast paced, hilarious and at times very poignant. The show manages to convey the want, need and societal expectation that is heaped upon love and marriage in our culture and does so in fun and easily digestible way. There is also a song and dance number with cupid that recaps the biological basis of love which for me was a highlight in the show.
The comedy comes from DeLa’s trademark camp and the art of innuendo she’s mastered that rivals the likes of Elvira where she can be simultaneously filthy and innocent all at the same time. The parody numbers in the show aren’t just there for entertainment, but they move the story along. Nothing is there by accident and its clear how much thought, love and dedication went into this show. Do yourself a favor and snag a ticket. The tour continues through North America and the UK through July.
