Celebrate LGBTQ Families Day

Mombian and Family Equality join forces to elevate stories of LGBTQ families.

Tuesday, June 1, 2021, is the 16th annual #LGBTQFamiliesDay, a time for storytelling and sharing to celebrate and support LGBTQ families. The event aims to elevate the experiences of LGBTQ families and their allies, raising awareness of their diversity, their challenges, and their joys.

#LGBTQFamiliesDay is developed and run by the award-winning LGBTQ-parenting site Mombian and sponsored by Family Equality. Anyone who supports LGBTQ families is welcome to participate — there is no need to be LGBTQ or a parent. To take part:

  • Post, tweet, or share on any social media channel in celebration and support of LGBTQ families on June 1, 2021, and include the hashtag #LGBTQFamiliesDay.
  • Follow the hashtag #LGBTQFamiliesDay throughout the day and share the stories, images, and thoughts from other participants.
  • Optionally, participants may visit mombian.com/lgbtqfamiliesday and submit a link to one of their posts for inclusion in the master list of #LGBTQFamiliesDay stories.

“#LGBTQFamiliesDay is about community and celebration,” said Dana Rudolph, founder and publisher of Mombian. “The past year has seen challenges for all families during the pandemic, and LGBTQ families continue to face additional obstacles in forming and securing our family bonds—making it even more important for us to strengthen our connections and showcase our diversity and resilience. #LGBTQFamiliesDay gives us a time at the start of Pride Month to do just that.”

“Family Equality is delighted to partner with Mombian to celebrate the 16th annual #LGBTQFamiliesDay, a day of visibility for our families and allies,” said Stacey Stevenson, CEO of Family Equality. “This has been a year unlike any other, and days like #LGBTQFamiliesDay remind us of the power of visibility, community, and connection now more than ever. We hope you’ll take a moment to celebrate on June 1 by sharing a family photo on social media or posting a message of support.”

Since 2006 (originally as Blogging for LGBTQ Families Day, but now incorporating all social media), #LGBTQFamiliesDay has engaged hundreds of people, including parents across the LGBTQ spectrum, LGBTQ individuals without children, children of LGBTQ parents, and non-LGBTQ allies. The event is held at the start of June, between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, in order to honor both, but also to highlight that not all families fit into the traditional structure of one mother and one father. Additionally, June is LGBTQ Pride Month.
