Del Shores comes out with new Sordid novel
Sordid Lives creator Del Shores has resurrected a 2007 partially written novel during the pandemic and has finished The Sordid Lives Saga: Before The Trip fifteen years later!
“We were all stuck at home during the early pandemic so I started something called Sordid Bedtime Stories on Facebook Live in early 2020. As I was searching for unproduced material to read, I came across nineteen chapters of an unfinished Sordid Lives novel,” Shores explained. “When I finished reading those chapters, fans demanded I finish the novel. So I did.”
Shores’ first novel is a prequel to the original play and film Sordid Lives, and those early chapters, written in 2007, were source material for Sordid Lives: The Series which ran on LOGO in 2009. Before The Trip is a reference to that good Christian woman, Peggy Ingram, tripping over her lovers’ prosthetic legs during a tryst at The Galaxy Motel. Set in Winters, Texas, the book is written as a collection of interconnected short stories, each chapter told from a Sordid Lives characters’ point of view.
Shores explains, “Sordid Lives started as a short story called Nicotine Fit. So my goal was that each chapter could stand alone as a short story, but that as a collection, the stories become a novel, connecting the dots of this scandalous affair and how it affected the denizens of that tiny Texas town.”
Film, TV and Instagram star Leslie Jordan, who has starred as “Brother Boy” in all incarnations of Shores’ Sordid franchise expresses his passion for his friend’s small-town world in the book’s foreword: “What I love about these stories is how Del gives us more depth with each and every character. They are funny, yes, but sometimes they will just break your heart. And he writes each and every one of them without judgment. Flaws and all, you just love them.”
