Did you know LGBT elders have a national day?

The importance of LGBT older adults and the contributions they have made to the lives of others will be celebrated on May 16 during National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day.

This unique day of celebration will take place virtually with videos, stories, and retrospectives on the official National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day Facebook Page.

Video submissions honoring an LGBT elder who made a difference in an individual’s life can be submitted now at www.lgbteldersday.org. The website includes a social media toolkit and information about the history and purpose of this special day of recognition.

“It’s important to celebrate elders every day,” said Sam McClure, director of the Center for LGBTQ Health Equity, which inaugurated the national day of recognition in Baltimore in 2016.

“Respect for those with more experience is an essential element of civility. In intergenerational dialogues, we discover we have differing opinions based on our experiences and perspectives. I love seeing Elders and youth learning from each other.”
