Family Equality launches state-by-state adoption resource for LGBTQ+ parents

Why should LGBTQ parents adopt their own child? That’s what many LGBTQ+ parents ask themselves.

With the continued anti-LGBTQ+ hate and legislation across the U.S., LGBTQ+ parents must ensure their legal connection to their children is secure and that it will be recognized by communities outside of where they live — should they move or even while traveling for vacation.

Family Equality, the leading advocate for LGBTQ+ families, is thrilled to announce the launch of a comprehensive online resource – a state-by-state guide to adoption for LGBTQ+ parents and prospective parents. The resource outlines what LGBTQ+ individuals need to know about securing legal parentage through stepparent, second parent/co-parent, and confirmatory adoption.

“Some LGBTQ+ families may select adoption through the child welfare system or a private adoption agency as a way to grow their families,” Meg York, Director of LGBTQ+ Family Law and Policy and Senior Policy Counsel said. “But for many LGBTQ+ families – including blended families and those who use assisted reproduction – adoption is a way for them to secure their legal relationship with their children. Our new resource helps in all of these situations.”

Navigating the adoption process can be complex, and for LGBTQ+ individuals, understanding the legal landscape in their home state is crucial. The state-by-state guide is designed to empower individuals by offering state-specific information on adoption laws, procedures, and resources tailored to the unique needs of the LGBTQ+ community.

Key features of the online resource include information on what each state allows and the process to secure legal parentage. A clickable U.S. map leads to detailed information on adoption laws in each state, ensuring individuals are well-informed about the legal requirements and processes.

The resource also provides answers to questions many prospective parents have like:

  • What role does adoption play in LGBTQ+ parenthood?
  • Why should I adopt my own children?
  • But isn’t a birth certificate or marriage enough?

“We believe that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, deserves the opportunity to build a loving and nurturing family,” Stacey Stevenson, President and CEO said. “Securing legal parentage for LGBTQ+ parents is a critical part of the journey but the rules and processes can be confusing and overwhelming. The launch of our comprehensive adoption resource reaffirms our commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ individuals and couples pursuing the dream of parenthood.”
