Harvey Fierstein’s “Torch Song” Coming Back To Broadway With Michael Urie

Harvey Fierstein’s seminal Tony-winning play Torch Song Trilogy, newly streamlined and renamed Torch Song, will once again illuminate Broadway, Playbill reports.

The celebrated Second Stage Theater production, which played off-Broadway last fall, will transfer later this year to Broadway’s Hayes Theater (formerly the Little Theatre), where the groundbreaking work first made its Broadway premiere in 1982.

“Seeing this new production of Torch Song was thrilling,” Fierstein said in a statement. “The audiences’ laughter seemed heartier, their tears more profound, and I could not have been happier. Now comes the news that we’re moving home… and all I can say is, dreams do come true!”

Filling the iconic role that Fierstein originated, Ugly Betty star Michael Urie will reprise his performance as Arnold Beckoff, a Jewish drag performer in New York City. Oscar winner Mercedes Ruehl is also set to return as Arnold’s disapproving mother.

“A great play makes you think, and what’s going on in the White House is always in the back of our minds,” Urie told NewNowNext about the timeliness of the revival. “We’re all confused, terrified, and clinging to each other, so Arnold, the ultimate caretaker, is the kind of friend we need right now. Yes, he’s flawed, but he has so much heart and compassion.”

Directed by Moisés Kaufman, who also helmed the off-Broadway revival, the Broadway engagement will begin performances October 9 and officially open November 1.

Complete casting will be announced at a later date.
