LaWana Mayfield is the first LGBTQ person elected in Charlotte, North Carolina
LGBTQ Victory Fund-endorsed candidate LaWana Mayfield won her election for Charlotte City Council, At-Large.
With this victory, Mayfield is the first out LGBTQ person ever elected citywide in Charlotte, the 16th largest city in the United States. There are currently just six Black out lesbians serving on city councils nationwide.
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund, issued the following statement about her win:
“LaWana is a skilled leader who has delivered real, meaningful results for the Charlotte community during her time on city council. Voters were clearly inspired by her deep policy experience and vision for a more equitable future. With so much at stake this election, LaWana’s win tonight is a clear sign the LGBTQ community and our allies are more eager and motivated than ever to make our voices heard at the ballot box this year. We are confident LaWana will continue making positive change for her community and that she will, no doubt, inspire others from our community to run for office.”
Victory Fund named Mayfield a Spotlight candidate, a designation given to state or local candidates in history-making races, that comes with additional support and services from LGBTQ Victory Fund to ensure they win on Election Day. In the final days before today’s election, Victory Fund provided on the ground campaign support and assisted in get out the vote efforts.
