London Grammar releases gorgeous new video

“Lose Your Head” marks a renewal and a welcome return for Hannah Reid and the band.

English indie band London Grammar have released their brand new single and official new music video for “Lose Your Head,” the striking third track to be revealed off of the band’s anticipated forthcoming new studio album Californian Soil.

“Lose Your Head” embodies a new clarity of purpose centered around London Grammar frontwoman Hannah Reid, whose spellbinding vocals may remind some listeners of Beth Orton’s “folktronica” from back in the day; or more recently Florence, or Freya Ridings. But Reid is multifaceted: alternately warm, elusive, ethereal; she presents a sonically goddess-like image of feminine strength and doubt. When she hits the lower notes her voice exhibits a rich timbre that harks back to early Annie Lennox. But she is of course uniquely herself and such comparisons only serve to guide the novice listener. Her variant use of gender address in lyrics is most welcome and helps land her in this post.

It’s that combination of the rich silk of Reid’s slightly melancholic voice folded into dream-pop electronica that transports the listener into another world where emotions and intent swirl like natural elements, only to disappear in a whisper of cloud. Kudos to electronic producer George FitzGerald who also co-produced the band’s hugely successful return single “Baby It’s You,” (it will have you hooked).

London Grammar’s debut album, the double-platinum UK selling If You Wait was an international success upon its release in 2013, and was followed by their #1 UK record Truth Is A Beautiful Thing in 2017. Their music has been streamed 1 billion times and the band is considered one of the most noteworthy and distinctive UK bands of their generation. Together, Reid, Dominic Major and Dan Rothman form the most intriguing musical trio since Alt-J.

“’Lose Your Head’ is about power and control in relationships,” says Reid. “The lyrics are quite dark, but I wanted to show the song in an upbeat way.” Watch the stunning, dreamlike new video directed by Zhang + Knight here.

California Soil, the band’s third studio album, is set for release on February 12, 2021 via iTunes. Stream or download the single “Lose Your Head” here.
