Modica adds a delicious and healthy twist to your favorite cocktails

As we ease into cocktail season it’s time to start looking around for new, different, healthy cocktail mixers—and we have located an innovative gay brand for you!

Modica is a new gay-founded brand created by two guys with a love of good drinks who met while in business school. What’s unique about Modica is that it is a colorful and creative brand that belongs in your bar fridge, but which uses known superfood ingredients such as ginger, tart cherries, blueberries, aloe, cacao, lemon and more. After all, why should indulging in your favorite alcoholic libation equate with ingesting bad stuff? If your preferred cocktail or mocktail is fun, celebratory, social and relaxing, it should give you an immunity boost too! Modica mixers are made with naturally-sourced, high quality ingredients including added vitamins, and electrolytes — and made without preservatives or artificial ingredients. For example, these mixers use fruits and vegetable juices to lend them color.

And why not try the rainbow of flavors: Blueberry Lavender Lemon Drop, Cacao Espresso Martini, Cucumber Aloe Margarita, Tart Cherry Old Fashioned.

We road-tested the Turmeric Ginger Mule because we love a good Moscow Mule, but this mixer is simply delicious with good acidity, a little bit of heat, and a vibrant color. It uses turmeric powder, ginger juice, black pepper and B vitamins to give it its natural color and uplifting punch. Just add your favorite liquor—or sparkling water for a mocktail or cooler. See the simple recipe below.

Classic Mule

Earthy, spicy and bright, this is the perfect cocktail for a healthy and rejuvenating Spring.

1 pt Turmeric Ginger Mule Mix

1 pt Vodka or Bourbon (or any other spirit, or club soda for a mocktail)

Combine equal parts Turmeric Ginger Mule Mix to Vodka or Bourbon. Shake and pour over ice. Garnish with a lime wheel. For a mocktail, combine equal parts mix with club soda over ice.

Perhaps it’s the natural ingredients, but we found Modica to be surprisingly food-friendly and pairs well with complementary flavors such a fruits, nuts, and cheeses.

About the co-founders

JD Mitchell (right) didn’t learn how to make a cocktail until he was 28 years old. He handsqueezed a dozen limes before realizing there had to be a better way, and now he’s focused on spreading the good news: cocktails can be easy, delicious, and even better-for-you. But before he went behind the bar, JD worked in sales and marketing and maintained a client portfolio of Fortune 50 companies. He also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia from 2011-2013. He earned his MBA in Entrepreneurship from University of Louisville in 2018.

Eric (left) , has been making cocktails for over a decade. He worked as a bartender and manager before opening his first bar/restaurant, The Hub, shortly after completing his undergraduate degree. In 2017, he opened a champagne bar. As an award-winning bartender and mixologist, he loves creating the perfect craft cocktail for any occasion. He earned in his MBA in Entrepreneurship from the University of Louisville in 2018.
