New data reveals the most (and least) LGBTQ-friendly cities in America
Clever, a real estate data company, has published a new study that ranks America’s most LGBTQ-friendly major cities, and there are few surprises in their findings!
San Francisco earned the No. 1 spot, while Memphis took the bottom spot as the least LGBTQ-friendly city.
What are some of the reasons San Francisco is so great for the LGBTQ community? For starters, with 0.63 gay bars per 100,000 residents, San Fran has 110% more gay bars than the average city in the study. However, it’s beaten out by New Orleans, in No. 10 spot, which has a remarkable 1.43 gay bars per 100,000 residents – the highest of any other metropolitan area.
As the least LGBTQ-friendly city, 36% of Memphis residents oppose same-sex marriage — 33% more than the overall national response of 27%.
California stands as the most LGBTQ-friendly state overall, with five cities in the top 15. California also leads the study with a near-perfect state equality tally score of 43 out of a possible 43.5, an impressive 157% higher than the national average of 16.7. The state equality tally score measures how inclusive, or exclusive, a state is in regards to policies that affect LGBTQ residents.
The big surprises? New York City is missing from the Top 10! The Big Apple comes in at #20, behind Boston, Seattle, and Cleveland. And Dallas and Miami make it into the least friendly Top 10.
