Planned Parenthood endorses Sean Meloy

One week after the Supreme Court’s previewed plans to overturn Roe v. Wade, Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced their endorsement of Sean Meloy in the critical Democratic Primary for Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District.

This endorsement solidifies Sean Meloy as the pro-choice champion and leader in this race.

Alexis McGill Johnson, President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said: “Sean has been a leader on reproductive rights. While some will stop at nothing to elect an anti-abortion candidate, Sean will be the voice and the vote that people in Western Pennsylvania need.”

“At a time when right-wing extremists are attacking reproductive rights and privacy, I am honored to earn the endorsement of Planned Parenthood Action Fund. There has never been a more urgent and necessary time to elect pro-choice candidates,” said Meloy. “For the past four years, I was proud to work at a pro-choice, LGBTQ organization that elected pro-choice champions across the country. I will always advocate for my community and fight against right wing extremism that threatens our right to reproductive healthcare, privacy, and bodily autonomy. I’m running for Congress because we need leaders who have been fighting right-wing extremism from day one and for policies that actually help families like mine in PA-17.”

It comes as Sean Meloy, a lifelong Democrat, Allegheny County native, and local and national LGBTQ advocate, officially announced his run for United States Congress in Western Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District in March, 2022.

If elected, Meloy would be the first openly gay member of Congress from the Keystone State.

“I am the candidate to win and keep this district in Democratic hands because I have organized in this community and know what needs to be done to bring relief to working families, grow our local economy, create good union jobs for the 21st century, address our changing climate, and ensure marginalized groups are represented and protected under the law. I will be a pragmatic progressive voice that gets things done. I will be sure to put the welfare of the people of Western PA first and never forget they are the priority in all I’ll do,” said Meloy.

After announcing his campaign in November, Meloy raised more than $130,000 in 7 weeks, outraising all opponents in Q4 and reporting ⅔ of contributions at or less than $100. To date he has earned the endorsements of over 25 elected officials and community leaders. There is a definitive grassroots momentum building behind the candidate in this historic race.
