They/Them drops its official trailer

With less than two weeks to go until its premiere on Peacock, the new LGBTQ+ horror film They/Them has released its official trailer.

The film stars genre mainstay Kevin Bacon (Tremors, Hollow Man) as Owen Whistler who runs a conversion camp along with his therapist wife Cora played by Carrie Preston (True Blood). When a new crop of teens arrive for “treatment”, the campers and the staff begin to disappear one by one.

They/Them is shaping up to be a modern recapitulation of a classic horror setup, one that genre fans are extremely familiar with. Kevin Bacon himself got his start in one of the most infamous summer camp slasher films of all time- Friday the 13th, so it is exciting to see him at the helm of the subgenre’s reinvention.

Even more exciting is that this is a big studio horror film that is telling a queer horror story through a queer lens. The film’s three-time Academy Award nominated writer and first-time director John Logan is a gay man and is well versed in horror having written the series Penny Dreadful in addition to the movie Alien: Covenant and the screenplay for the film Sweeney Todd.

He told Fangoria Magazine: “I wanted to make a movie that celebrates queerness, with characters that I never saw when I was growing up. When people walk away from the movie, I hope they’re going to remember the incredible love that these kids have for each other and how that love needs to be protected and celebrated.”

They/Them debuts exclusively on Peacock August 5.
