Villagers campaign against gay sex parties in former pub
British tabloidThe Daily Mail reports that the village of Sea Palling in England is divided over a transgender-owned inn catering to gay men’s sex parties.
A group of local villagers who have formed the Sea Palling Action Group are campaigning against sex parties at their old local pub. They have now been challenged by Pride groups and LGBTQ activists in the area.
The men-only gatherings have been held biweekly for nearly three years at the former Old Hall Inn in Sea Palling, Norfolk. They are run by a male social club called Norfolk Lab, whose website states the parties “offer a safe and friendly environment where men can meet other men and have adult fun” in five playrooms, including a mock dungeon.
Now a small group of straight residents has started demanding the end of the 18+ male-only “xxx club nites.”
The conflict began after police were called earlier this month when locals protested outside the former pub when a party was going on.
The situation blew up on Facebook when the residents group started using transphobic language and misgendering to describe Mary Carberry, who describes herself as a transgender woman and bought the 18th Century former inn seven years ago.
Andrew Livingstone, vice-chair of Great Yarmouth and Waveney Pride, said: ‘Mary was misgendered on Facebook by members of the SPAG who referred to her as “he”, called her “a fake woman” and made comments such as, “That man needs to understand.”
Norfolk Lab has also come out in defense of Carberry. “Norfolk Lab community is appalled by the transphobic attack on our community host Mary Carberry and the homophobic attack on our own community group by the Sea Palling Action group Facebook page.
“This group was a small minority of the sea palling residents and the rest of the village would be appalled by the way there village has been represented. Norfolklab community would like to thank Great Yarmouth and Waveney Pride in condemning this behavior towards the LGBTQ+ community.”
They posted a link to the press release.
Pride supporters have staged a peaceful protest to show their solidarity with Carberry and push back against the transphobia of the small seaside town.
A spokesman for Norfolk Lab described themselves as a non-profit club, but confirmed that party guests at each event paid £15 cover charge for overheads, snacks and tea and coffee.
The parties can attract anywhere from a dozen to 35 men. He revealed: “Things had all been pretty quiet until some people started taking pictures of cars [arriving at the parties]. Someone was deliberately walking a dog across the road to slow people down. Pictures of one guest who has an 82-year-old partner with Alzheimer’s were then posted online.”
Carberry said the parties are private and not open to the public. While the property used to operate as a pub, it is now her place of residence. But one local said the property is being run as a sex-on-premises business “in a small family-oriented village. I don’t think many people especially with young families want such an establishment on their doorstep.”
Norfolk Police and the Pride group are now trying to resolve the situation between Carberry and the residents’ action group but as of the weekend this had not been achieved. Great Yarmouth & Waveney Pride posted on their Facebook account:
“Despite asking for the following from the Sea Palling Action Group we have been unable to reach a conciliatory position. We are disappointed that we have been unable to resolve this amicably to enable the position to move forward positively: To Sea Palling Action Group We are prepared to pull today’s protest on the following basis: Sea Palling Action Group are prepared to enter meaningful mediation with Mary Carberry without any further public mudslinging to enable Sea Palling to move forward peacefully and in harmony. A statement is sent to us recognising the errors in the transphobic language used in the public forum in deliberately misgendering Mary and apologising for this. Offering a guarantee that the activities of outing members of Norfolk Lab will cease immediately.”
